Perhaps we travel abroad too often and get to know the cities, natural beauties and culture of other nations, and we don't even think about our own domestic wealth. There are many beautiful places in Slovakia that are appreciated by foreign tourists and film productions. Come with us in the footsteps of film stars.
Slovak film production, of course, largely uses domestic locations, but filmmakers from Europe and Hollywood have not avoided Slovakia when filming. Our castles and chateaux, natural beauties and cities are the most popular among filmmakers. Which places in Slovakia have starred in films?
The popularity of Orava Castle among Slovak filmmakers is confirmed by the number of fairy tales that were filmed here. The most famous include The Thrush King Beard (1984), The Fairy Tale (1991), The Falconer Tomáš (1999) and Love by the Hair (2014). The film Adam Šangala (1972) with Ivan Palúch in the lead role was also filmed at Orava Castle.
We also chose Banská Štiavnica as the location for filming our FASHION FILM for the Autumn/Winter 2019 collection . We wanted to draw attention to our Slovak production in a place that breathes Slovak culture and art, but is also so global that it attracts more and more domestic and foreign tourists. And that is exactly what we want to bring to you - world-class quality designed and made in Slovakia .
Bratislava
Our capital has starred in several films. George Clooney, who starred opposite Nicole Kidman in the 1997 film Peacemaker, walked the streets of downtown Bratislava. Bratislava played the role of Vienna, Sarajevo, and St. Martin's Cathedral played the role of New York's cathedral.
In 2001, the war drama Uprising was filmed in Bratislava, starring David Schwimmer, known as Ross from the TV series Friends, Jon Voight and David Sutherland. Slovak actors also played minor roles alongside Hollywood stars.
The latest film shot in Bratislava is Red Sparrow (2018), which features Jennifer Lawrence walking through the streets of the Petržalka housing estate. Additional footage was shot in Istropolis and around the Slovak Radio.
Spiš Castle
The largest castle ruin in Central Europe has been the setting for several films, the most successful of which is Dragon Heart, starring Dennis Quaid in 1996.
The next film is Kull the Conqueror, starring Kevin Sorbo, known from the Hercules series.
Spiš Castle was also chosen by the producers of the epic film about the fall of the Roman Empire , The Last Legion , starring Colin Firth and Ben Kingsley. In the village of Hodkovce below the castle, a statue of a legionnaire was left as a souvenir for the residents of the filming.
Čachtice Castle
This castle, known in Slovakia for the legend of the "bloody" Countess Elizabeth Báthory, of course, became the setting for the film Bathory , which was filmed by Juraj Jakubisko.
In addition to it, the aforementioned film Dragon's Heart was also filmed here.
Devin
The castle ruins near Bratislava also hosted the filmmakers of the adventure fantasy Dragonheart . In addition, the aforementioned Kull the Conqueror was filmed here, with other scenes from the film being shot just a short distance away on the Danube.Bojnice Castle
One of our most beautiful and best-preserved castles attracted the filmmakers of the story of the courageous Princess Fataghiró (Princess Fantaghiró: The Cave of the Golden Rose) and the creators of the film World without End based on the bestseller by Ken Follett.
In addition to these, several Slovak or Czech fairy tales and films were also filmed in Bojnice - The Insanely Sad Princess with Helena Vondráčková and Václav Neckař, Vivat Beňovský in the lead role with Jozef Adamovič, and the new fairy tale Johankino tajomstvo from 2015. The 1986 series Safari was also filmed in Bojnice Castle and the nearby zoo.
Red Stone Castle
In addition to Spišský Castle, the films Kull the Conqueror and The Last Legion were also filmed in the Red Stone Castle. The filmmakers of the Fantaghiro stories also came here from Bojnice. This castle is also associated with the action film Adrenalin: Fear The Rush starring Christopher Lambert. A few scenes of the film were also filmed in Bratislava and Modra.
The castle has also become the setting for several fairy tales. The 1982 Slovak-German fairy tale Salt over Gold starring Libuša Šafránková was filmed here.
The castle's underground became the enchanted castle of King Svarog (Lukáš Vaculík) from the fairy tale A Christmas Wish (2018). Some time ago, we also used these spaces to present our Spring/Summer 2017 collection .
Orava Castle
Orava Castle is probably the most popular castle among filmmakers. It even has a special exhibition, the Mediatheque, dedicated to films shot in the castle's historical premises. One of the most famous films shot here is the 1922 horror film Nosferatu (eine Symphonie des Graunes) , inspired by Bram Stoker's novel.
Scenes from the second sequel to the film Dragonheart were also filmed in the castle, as well as the fairy tale from the Italian-German production The Princess and the Pauper (1997) and the drama from the same production The Tsar's Emissary (1999).
Grove
The village of Háj, which is not very well known in general, is located a short distance from Košice and became the filming location for the movie Behind Enemy Lines with Owen Wilson. The creators of this village donated a prop from the filming – a large 15-meter statue of an angel – to the village in gratitude for providing space at the football stadium. Since it is a prop, the statue is not made of stone, but of plastic.
Banska Stiavnica
The city in central Slovakia, known for its historic streets, countless tajchs (traditional Slovak taverns) and inimitable atmosphere, became the filming location for the American film The Third Miracle in 1999. The scenes with the Allied bomber raid were shot right in the center of Banská Štiavnica.
