On the pages of our Journal, we constantly write about tips on how to improve your wardrobe . How to best prepare for spring or winter. And yet, until now, we have neglected the "problems" that literally concern your wardrobe. Problems that we all struggle with every morning. How to organize our closets so that our clothes don't look like a salad? How to fold things so that we can find what we need? And how to store our clothes so that they look good for as long as possible?
We bring you the answers to all these questions. Gentlemen, here are some tips on how to organize your wardrobe.
1. Don't overstuff
The sight of a closet full of 20% more clothes than it should be is familiar to all of us. However, by squeezing things, you not only create wardrobe chaos, but also shorten the life of your clothes. Shirts wrinkle, collars deform, buttons fall off. And we're not talking about jackets ! Squeezing them on top of each other destroys the shoulder straps and fabric, so your beautiful wool suits can quickly end up as ruined wool suits . The key is to have space for at least one more hanger between each item. This will make your closet look cleaner and your things won't suffer.2. Use the right hangers
Using the right hangers is the alpha and omega of a well-organized wardrobe. When storing jackets and suits, always use hangers that have wide shoulder straps. This will prevent the jacket from losing its shape, especially in the shoulders. If possible, hang suits on a hanger that has a rubber-lined trouser pocket so that the trousers don't slip and you won't be surprised by an unpleasant crease one day. However, for shirts, it is completely unnecessary to have a wide hanger that takes up a lot of space in your wardrobe. Feel free to reach for narrow hangers, even if space is really tight, metal hangers from the dry cleaners will work very well.3. But remember that you can also compose
Remember that not everything needs to be hung, and for some things we wouldn't even recommend it. Casual pants or jeans don't wrinkle as easily, so there's no reason to waste space hanging them. Feel free to fold them in half and put them on a shelf.
Sweaters and pullovers are a separate topic. Everything knitted stretches unnecessarily on a hanger and loses its shape. So take our advice and fold them neatly on yourself.
It's nice to "rearrange" these things from time to time so you don't wrinkle them unnecessarily. Just like in war. You'll always have a feeling of fantastic satisfaction.
4. The one-year rule
All the rules mentioned above will sooner or later fly out the window. We keep buying new things, space is getting smaller and we are soon back to our good old mess. As great as it is to get something new, it is important to know how to move things on. Sit down at least once a year and do an audit of your closet. If you haven’t worn a piece of clothing in the last year, it is time to say goodbye. After all, it doesn’t have to go to the trash, but it can make someone else happy .
Our TIP: Read how to care for your clothes so they will bring you joy for many years.
