Smart casual is one of the most common dress codes, but still, not everyone is completely clear about it. It doesn't require a suit, but it doesn't require a T-shirt and jeans either. So what? Watch the video and read a few basic rules that will help you master smart casual with ease, whether you're having a day at work or an informal business meeting.
What is smart casual?
Smart casual is a style that combines casualness with elegance . The name itself consists of two words – smart and casual . “Smart” represents clothing traditionally associated with tailoring – jackets , shirts , dress pants or leather shoes . “Casual” refers to a more relaxed, everyday style – T-shirts , jeans , sweatshirts or sneakers.
So it doesn't require a suit , but it also doesn't require jeans and a sweatshirt . It's a thoughtful, yet relaxed outfit that makes you look presentable, without unnecessary pretension . The basis is simplicity, quality materials, and an emphasis on details.
Where is it worn?
Smart casual is ideal for situations where you want to look stylish but not too formal :
– weekdays without a strict dress code,
– informal working meetings,
– dinner in a restaurant,
– cultural events (unless they have a specific dress code),
– family celebrations or gatherings with friends.
What to wear?
Pants
Chinos or dress pants are ideal. If you do decide to wear jeans, make sure the rest of your outfit looks smart. Timeless colors like blue, beige, gray, or olive are always a good choice.
Shirt or polo shirt
An elegant shirt in a light color or with a subtle pattern. In the fall, complement the shirt with a thin V-neck sweater . You can't go wrong with a quality turtleneck either. In the summer, you can choose a knitted polo shirt . These are currently a big hit.
Jacket
A lightweight jacket made of wool, cotton or linen. For more casual occasions, a quality cardigan or overshirt will suffice.
Shoes
Leather derbies, loafers, brogues or pure leather sneakers. In colors: black, dark brown or white (for sneakers).
Accessories
Less is more. Smart casual relies on subtle accents. Accessories include a watch, a belt that matches your shoes, or a leather bag.
What to avoid?
– Jeans , especially those that are washed, torn or brightly colored.
– Sweatshirts, printed T-shirts , shorts or striking sportswear.
– Dirty or worn-out shoes.
– Excessive formality – a tie is not necessary, a suit may seem too much.
Smart casual = thoughtful casualness
Smart casual looks relaxed yet polished . It’s not a business office outfit, but it’s not a weekend look either. It’s a style that shows that you have taste, that you care, but without having to draw attention to it. And if you’re not sure what to wear to work, on a date or for an afternoon drink – smart casual is always the right choice.
