From overalls, denim has evolved into original pieces and accessories for every day. Originally the sturdy workwear of gold miners, it has become a clothing phenomenon that has been popular for decades.
During World War II, women also started wearing jeans - also as work clothes. In the 1950s, James Dean made them famous as a symbol of rebellion, until then it was unthinkable to wear jeans to a restaurant or to school, for example. Today, denim is used not only for trousers, but also for shirts, jackets, dresses, skirts and various backpacks and bags, and with the right combination you can get an outfit for various occasions.
How did jeans come about?
Their history began in 1873, when gold miners in San Francisco began complaining that the pockets on their work pants were tearing. Their problem was solved by tailor Jacob Davis, who reinforced the pockets with rivets, creating the pants that the whole world wears today. That same year, Davis patented the idea with Levi Strauss, and the first jeans were produced under the Levi's brand.By the way, the origin of the name jeans comes from the name of the Italian city of Genoa (French: Genes), where similar coarse fabric was produced in the Middle Ages. The name jeans came from the Italian brand of jeans sold in the 1970s in Czechoslovakia in Tuzex stores. In Texas (and also in Spain), they are still cowboy pants, which is why they are called t-shirts.
After Levi's, other brands began to produce jeans in different cuts and finishes. Color variations, rhinestones, embroidery, a worn effect, and holes were added. Jeans were initially pants with buttons in the slit, but the Lee brand replaced them with a zipper in 1926. Also, a small fifth pocket on the right side (which was once used by cowboys to store pocket watches) was added later, as were belt loops (in 1922).
Jeans production
It takes about 7,000 liters of water to produce one pair of jeans (about 1 kg of cotton fiber), which is why they are one of the most demanding garments in terms of environmental impact. Currently, there are various alternatives that try to reduce this negative impact - for example, by recycling materials. Originally, jeans were dyed with natural indigo dye, later with synthetic dyes. Although jeans are not the most environmentally friendly clothing, thanks to the strength of the fabric and if they are well-made, they will last in your wardrobe for many years. Of course, if you take proper care of them. ( You can read more about caring for jeans in this article. )
