The decision to start paying attention to dressing can be quite stressful for newcomers. You are bombarded with rules, prohibitions, and orders from all sides, which can easily get even experienced fighters lost from time to time.
What to focus on and what to leave aside? In our Alain Delon Magazine, we regularly guide you with tips for your better self. However, if you don't feel like reading long-winded reflections, here is a list of basic mistakes that you should avoid by all means.
Mistake #1: Long pants
Whether you're putting on a suit or jeans in the morning, this mistake can ruin any look. Yet many of us make it time and time again. Pile-up fabric on your shoes makes you look "sloppy" no matter how much effort you put into your outfit. The fix is simple: have your pants shortened so that there's no more than one pleat. The front should end at your laces and the back should be about halfway down your ankle.
It's even easier with casual pants. If they're a little too long for you, just roll them up. How to do that? Check out this article .
Mistake #2: Buttoning up
“Wait, what could be wrong with buttoning up?” you ask. Well, not much, and not much at the same time. Incorrectly buttoning up a jacket is, along with long trousers, perhaps the most common mistake we make. So once and for all: - On a two-button jacket, only fasten the top button, leaving the bottom button unbuttoned. - On a three-button jacket, we can button either just the middle button or the middle button together with the top button. - With a one-button jacket, it's easiest, we button it up. When standing, your jacket should always be buttoned. It's not just a silly etiquette, it also gives your body a nice silhouette. End of report!Mistake #3: Clothing size
One of the basic rules has been the right fit for many years. Whether it's a shirt, jacket or trousers , everything should have the right length, not just the right width. Meters of unnecessary fabric on the body don't hide imperfections, on the contrary, they make you look like you inherited the clothes from your older brother.
Just like knowing how to slim down properly, you need to know when to stop. A proper Slim Fit doesn't mean looking like (forgive the repeated family analogy) "like a younger brother."
If the buttons are falling off your shirt , it's time to buy a bigger one... If you're not sure how your clothes should fit, just check out one of our guides - How to Wear a Suit and How to Wear Shirts .
Mistake #4: Tie Length
The rule that the end of a tie should reach just above the top of the belt is known all over the world, and yet we often make this mistake. Gentlemen, don't be lazy and if you don't get it right the first time, take the effort to start tying it again. A tie that is too long today strongly resembles the look of the current American president, while a tie that is too short looks like you're kidding yourself...
Mistake #5: Too many add-ons
Men's fashion websites are flooded with photos of well-dressed people with perfectly matched ties, handkerchiefs, belts , hats, watches, bracelets, tattoos, and whatnot... However, street style photography for fashion magazines probably won't affect you in everyday life on the street, which is why less is sometimes more. Especially if you're a beginner in dressing. A nice suit with a tie will be much better than trying to wear as many fads as possible at all costs. If you're not sure about the color combination, feel free to skip the handkerchief , you're not being shot for it.
