He is a man of many arts. He does not like to devote himself exclusively to one of them, so he avoids stereotypes and seeks new impulses. He (re)discovered photography as an expression of his view of the world in the spring of this year. Talented actor, musician and photographer of our latest collection Richard Autner.
However, he definitely plans to continue his acting career. You can still see him in performances at three Bratislava theaters. "I really enjoy playing all the characters that are left to me. Jánošík (at the Aréna Theatre, ed. note), where I play the main character, is a production that, thanks to the collaboration with a historian, offers the audience a comprehensive picture of how the legend with the name Jánošík came about. In Pressburger Fight Club (at the Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav Theatre, ed. note), which we premiered last season, I play Imrich Lichtenfeld, who is a fascinating figure in Bratislava's history. I also really enjoy playing Laurie in Little Women (at the Slovak National Theatre, ed. note). He is an extremely cheerful guy who loves life. And I also enjoy playing in the fairy tale Nebojs , a fearless young man who travels and wants to save his beloved. They are really my favorite productions," says Richard about his current characters.
But he still has one dream character. "I really want to play someone with Tourette's syndrome, which has fascinated me for a long time. It's a huge challenge for me. But every character is a challenge."
"My first contact with photography came in 2016, when I was at a point where I didn't know what to do with my life. My parents lent me money for a camera and I started taking photos. I posted a few photos on social media and in the amateur section of National Geographic, where people commented on the photos. Once a National Geographic photographer liked my photo there, and that really encouraged me." Despite his initial enthusiasm, Richard stopped taking photos and sold his equipment. However, this spring he felt the desire to get back into it. "I bought new equipment with my own money and started taking photos. And it got to the point where I photographed Alain Delon's fall clothing collection . And I'm still very happy about it. I hope that I will someday be able to make a living from photography, in parallel with acting and music."
He doesn't have any favorite locations, he takes a lot of photos in the forests of Záhorie, and in the summer he discovered places in Slovakia thanks to concerts. However, his dream is to take photos in Norway, India, Nepal, and Tibet.
When we approached him about collaborating, he was immediately coming up with ideas. "When I looked at your new collection, Stupava immediately came to mind. I love, and I make no secret of it, everything British and Nordic. It's similar to me in some ways. I like foggy, gloomy weather, and I could immediately associate it with an overgrown, angry guy with a mysterious look in his eyes. And the fact that you gave me freedom and identified with the idea made me enjoy it. Because I could also realize my idea of the photos I wanted to take sometime in the future. You actually offered me the opportunity to realize myself."
Richard is gradually transforming his passion for literature into his own book , which will be a bit of a fairy tale for adults. "Although the story is more tragic than fairy tale. The book itself is very positive, but I feel that I have the opportunity to teach people more about those negative topics. I want to transform all the philosophies that shaped me into the book."
Acting
He started acting as an amateur at the age of five, started attending a conservatory at the age of fifteen, and took up acting professionally. He continued his studies at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava and worked at the Slovak National Theatre, which he finished last season. "I've been acting my whole life, and it slowly stopped giving me joy, I started doing it very mechanically. The fact that I resigned from the SND made me happy and happy to go there. I like seeing my colleagues in the evenings and I'm generally happier," says Richard about his resignation from the theatre.
During his acting career, he played dozens of characters, and he was particularly fond of the negative ones. "We were taught in school that when you study a negative character, you should find out what's good about them. Try to find something positive in the bad. And especially find out why the person is bad. For me, such a character offers more challenges, to explore why the person is the way they are, what they've experienced. While the good guys are boring in my opinion. But I enjoy both," says Richard, recalling the television fairy tale Christmas Wish and the main character Martin, the positive hero. "That was really beautiful. I really enjoyed filming it, and what makes me extremely happy is that it has already become a Christmas classic. Since 2018, when this fairy tale premiered, it has been shown every Christmas, including in the Czech Republic. It's great."
Music
At the beginning and end of the concert we always have a drumming session, which is spontaneous and we basically do whatever we want. That's probably the most beautiful part of the concert for me. I enjoy transferring energy from us to the people and back.
In addition to his collaboration with Martin Geišberg, Richard has already managed to sing two duets in his relatively short musical career. One with fellow actress Nela Pocisková and the other with the band Sole . "I really enjoy collaborating with other musicians. It's great, everyone brings something new that I wouldn't have done myself. I like the mix of our energies that is created," says Richard, revealing that he has already approached another well-known Slovak singer for a duet.
Photography
Richard's photos feature nature, animals, architecture and people. You can feel the inspiration from the English countryside and the Nordic nature. "I don't specialize in anything in particular. I enjoy nature the most, but I try to photograph everything that I find interesting, beautiful, inspiring."
For me, acting and music have their charisma precisely in that live performance. While a photo, when you click it, is lifeless, it will remain static, until social networks are deleted or the world ends.
Even more than taking photos, Richard enjoys post-production. The art of playing with a photo so that it evokes the desired feelings. "In post-production, a photo can be browned, acquire different colors or atmosphere. Thanks to it, I can literally smell the gasoline from the motorcycle in the photo, or tobacco or whatever. I enjoy changing the atmosphere of a photo. One photo can have different styles so that it always looks different."
Books
He also has a great fondness for non-fiction about World War II and JRR Tolkien . "I have all his books, I buy different editions. He is a visionary to me. I find it hard to believe that he would describe everything in his books so comprehensively and perfectly... It seems incredible to me that he would make it up. What if he was just describing something that is not visible to us ordinary people? This is very fascinating to me."
The only thing Richard Autner regrets is that he won't be able to illustrate it himself. "I already have the visual side of the book in my head, but I don't have an illustrator yet. I would really like to be able to paint. To express what I see in my head. I've tried, but I don't know," says Richard, adding that the book is in the process, but it may take years to finish.
