The internet is full of advice and tips on how a man should dress properly, so it's only natural that we at Alain Delon Journal have been following suit.
Our guide is a little different, though. We won't burden you with rules, etiquette, and unnecessary lessons about the modern man's appearance. Okay, maybe a little. Instead, we've taken everything related to dress and style and distilled the information into a few clear tips for looking great 24/7.
We bring you tips on how to improve part of your wardrobe, starting with the most basic...
Suit
Learn how to wear a suit and you've won 90% of the war. Above all, remember three basic rules:1. Fit 2. Fit 3. FitIf a suit fits you well, even the cheapest one will look great. But if you're drowning in a sea of fabric, it won't help that it cost more than the average monthly salary. The key is to get the fit right, otherwise there's no point in wearing the suit. But how do you know if a suit fits you exactly?
1. Start at the top
A good suit should hug your shoulders, not hang off them. Most men wear a size that is actually a size too big for them. Next time, try a suit a size smaller than you think you need. When you put on your jacket, you should jump to attention and stand out. It needs to have some strength to it. If the suit doesn't fit in your shoulders, hands off.2. Work out your biceps
Sleeve width is something that many of us look at last, if at all. But think about it. Slim sleeves on a suit can surprisingly shape your figure. So be careful not to make them too wide.3. The torso is the most important thing
A jacket should always fit your body, if it doesn't fit at the waist, the tailor will be happy to narrow it down for you. This will accentuate your shoulders, even if your name isn't Rocky Balboa. This creates the illusion of an inverted triangle, and those of us who like to have a beer or two in the evening will definitely appreciate this.4. Show a little shirt
Your sleeve should reach just above your wrist bone, leaving about a half-inch of the shirt cuff sticking out. Think of it as a frame for a picture, an elegant finishing touch to a perfect piece.5. Don't drag meters of fabric across the floor unnecessarily
At Alain Delon, we like a clean, slim look for trousers that are straight in the front. Your trousers should just touch the top of your shoes, not gather in three layers so that they are not even visible. These trousers will visually lengthen and slim you.6. Something that never goes out of style
The gray suit is the Swiss Army knife of suits. If you have to have just one, this is it. It works in all circumstances, from a morning meeting to an evening drink. The only thing you have to master is choosing the right shade of gray. You don't want a summery pale gray, nor a dark charcoal. What you need is somewhere in between. When in doubt, pair it with a white shirt and a dark solid tie, Cary Grant-style, and we guarantee you'll be the best-dressed man in the room. With proper care, a quality suit will serve you reliably for many years.
