Style Guide - Prečo by ste sa mali obliekať ako váš dedko

Retro style has been screaming at us from every direction for quite a few years now. Hipster retro cafes, retro cars, retro furniture... Not to mention fashion. The seventies, eighties and nineties come back into fashion so often that it feels like they never really went out. Moreover, they come and go so randomly that perhaps the invisible hand of fashion is rolling the dice.

While some retro gadgets should be kept locked away in the dustbin of history (ahem, bellhops), sometimes it doesn't hurt to dig through old photos of your grandparents to find out that what they were wearing wasn't so out of place. Go back to the days when a jacket was casually thrown over your shoulders even during trips to the grocery store or post office, and get inspired by the modern tips of old gentlemen.

Brown teacher's uniform

A brown jacket may seem problematic at first glance. Even more so if it has a currently very popular small check pattern. In this case, the look of a tired history teacher is hiding around the nearest corner. Thanks to a good slim and especially short cut, however, this return to the past seems fresher than the fruit on Miletička. It looks great combined with blue shades and especially with jeans. Moreover, in combination with suede loafers, you have a spring look that you can use all day long – in the morning it will take you through all the meetings, while in the evening you can easily handle something more formal, such as a modern opening.

Those seventies

You'd be hard-pressed to find a more iconic 1970s style than a large, pale brown check. Paired with suit trousers, this blazer will transport you back in time. While the good old Brits would wear this traditional office uniform with a starched white shirt and a pinhead tie, the modern twist on this classic offers many new possibilities.

How about choosing a shirt with a subtle check instead of the traditional white one – yes, two checks shouldn’t go together at once, but in this case it can work. Just make sure the check on the shirt is really subtle and, most importantly, smaller than on the jacket. Of course, don’t forget about the right fit, as always.

Black and white images

Just because photos used to be black and white doesn't mean things in them had to have color. The combination of black, white, and everything in between is an evergreen that never disappoints. Like brown plaid, gray can be a bit intimidating at first, but know that it's a blast with gray or black pants. In this case, however, take a little more steam with the shirt and leave it plain white. This will give you a combination that's fantastic for those times when you need to be more formal, but you're not quite ready for a suit yet... You know the dilemma...

Funky patterns are always in fashion

Funky shirts full of big flowers and hallucinogenic patterns have been with us for some time. While your fathers would have received a proper mushroom soup at work for such excess, times have fortunately changed for us. Today, even the craziest patterns can look elegant and stylish. Just tone them down with soft earthy colors, like beige or navy blue, which will help you conjure up a great spring outfit. But be careful of one thing, a T-shirt with a giant tiger head print does not count here, I hope everyone understands that.
We would like to thank Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum for providing the space for photography.
