What can one expect from something that has been continuously improving for forty years? If you sit down at the drawing board decade after decade to reinvent a better version of the same thing, will you achieve perfection, or will you get tangled in the tangle of your own genius?
But genius also brings with it a burden of expectations. The BMW 5 Series of previous generations has always been without a doubt one of the absolute best options for devouring hundreds of kilometers. And the 5 Series, which was replaced this year by its new reincarnation, was considered the king, against which many competitors ground their teeth. How did BMW manage to cope?
To find out if BMW has managed to push the boundaries a little further, our friends from Auto Palace Bratislava willingly lent us their latest addition.
At first glance, the new 5 Series isn't all that different from its older predecessor. The exterior design is more of an evolution than a revolution. And while they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, we think the subtle changes are exactly what the BMW 5 Series needed.
The exterior theme continues with the same story in the interior. The first step will evoke a sense of peace in the owner of the outgoing model, he will find everything where it was before, no drastic changes await him. Despite this, everything feels a little different. The seats are more comfortable, the dashboard is more pleasant, the buttons are softer to the touch. All these little things make it so that even though you are sitting in the 5th row, you feel a little like you are in the 7th row for a moment. You are surrounded by luxury previously seen in super limousines.
The technology that amazed the new seven a few years ago has found its way here by leaps and bounds. A large display with cutting-edge information, passive safety bordering on autonomous driving, and gadgets like gesture control of the infotainment system are all here, you just need to put a cross in the right box when configuring the vehicle.
However, BMW has not shot all its trump cards on the design, the new model can't just look better than its predecessor, it must, according to the BMW ethos, drive better than its predecessor. And all the changes contribute to making you feel as comfortable behind the wheel of the limousine as never before.
If you thought for a moment that the driving characteristics of the new 5 Series could be anything but excellent, forget it. The chassis is already softer in the basic suspension than in the outgoing version, which only contributes to comfort on roads full of holes. However, despite its softer setting, the car sits like a nail in the corners and gives the driver sufficient confidence. Sometimes you may need to shorten the journey on winding roads, the new heel will definitely not disappoint you.
The character of the chassis is perfectly supported by the engine. The silence in the cabin is comparable to vehicles in a class higher, thanks to the refinement of the unit, which only underlines BMW's ability to create a vehicle that far exceeds its category. Despite its small volume on paper, the two-liter diesel feels lively. You will get to your destination quickly and relaxed like never before. Of course, if you like some extra horses, we will certainly not discourage you from the three-liter six-cylinder.
The new BMW 5 Series is, without a doubt, once again the best car in its class, easily outpacing its competitors from Stuttgart, Ingolstadt and Coventry. The biggest compliment we can give the new BMW 5 Series, however, is the fact that we constantly compare it to its bigger brother, the 7 Series.
Many people can make a good machine today. However, to make a car that will be a class above in terms of luxury and driving experience, that takes skill. Bravo, BMW, you've done it again.
The details that bring the sedan into 2017 are inspired by the larger 7 Series, but without making the individual models indistinguishable. The 5 Series is still a 5 Series, and you can tell the two cars apart at a glance, which is a good thing. The 5 Series has retained its unmistakable, elegant shape.
